The Canadian Jewellers Association Centenary Celebration

July 23, 2018

On Saturday, April 27, 2018, over 280 CJA Members and Guests attended the 100th Anniversary Gala held at the internationally renowned Art Gallery of Ontario. This was likely the largest gathering of Canadian jewellery industry members in over 30 years. The evening began with a cocktail reception in the spectacular Walker Court sponsored by our Title Sponsor Asia Pacific under the banners Bullion Mart, Silver Gold Express and Bullion Bulletin. Courtesy of Asia Pacific, attendees were treated to a complimentary valet service, coat check and a premium bar and hors-d'oeuvres service. In addition, the gathering was serenaded by a classical string quartet and the evening hosted by Alicia Markson, formerly of CTV News. Dinner sponsored by Maple Leaf Diamonds, followed the reception as Members and Guests retired to the Baillie Court with its breathtaking view of the illuminated CN Tower. The four-course meal with wines appropriately paired by the Chef was designed around a beef tenderloin and shrimp entrée. Longtime CJA Member and industry notable Peter Myerson said Benediction and during dinner, the attendees enjoyed a historical retrospective on the 100 years of the CJA provided by Past President Pierre Akkelian and a PowerPoint presentation incorporating hundreds of CJA photos from 1919 to present day. The highlight of the evening was a performance by stage and recording artist Robert Pilon. Robert who played the signature roles of The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables sang a couple of the classic tunes from these productions and a special tune in honour of the  CJA’s 100 Anniversary accompanied by a 20 person choir. Following Robert, His Worship John Tory, Mayor of Toronto, spoke to the gathering paying tribute to the jewellery industry and the important role played by the CJA. After dinner, Members and Guests returned to a transformed Walker Court for the Centenary Dance Party.  A New York City style DJ set the mood with the beat of the music encompassing many decades of pop and rock classics plus temptations galore with a premium bar and treat table all sponsored by RBC Insurance.  The party lasted into the wee hours, and a good time was had by all!
